A long overdue visit to Paulaner Bräuhaus!

CBA finally made its way back to the much respected Paulaner Bräuhaus right in town for our October catchup!

We were very graciously hosted by Head Brewer Alex who welcomed CBA back after such a long time and we were privy to a brewhouse tour as well great conversations with Alex on commerial brewing.

Finally a return to Brewdays ~ Grain to Glass Brewing Session on 26th August 2023

It has been a long 4 years since the Club was able to experience a Brewery for members wanting to learn about full-grain home brewing and we finally made it happen!

On this Brew Day, we decided on a Pumpkin Porter and a Marzen ~ which would be ready in October in time for appropriately Halloween and Oktoberfest where CBA is planning to organise an event for members to taste the fruits of the day’s labor!

We started the day early with guidance from our 2 award winning home brewers Andy and Brett

The Hoptimist question ~ is your Brewzilla half full or half empty?

Andy’s Masterclass on how to work the Brewzilla Gen 4….

Getting some help from the BrewFather tool to spec out the parameters…

Grain Bill for the Pumpkin Porter ~ already milled courtesy of iBrew Singapore!

Grains for the Marzen ~ the attendees chewed through all the grains to get an idea of the flavours they contribute to the beer…

After mashing and batch sparging, the brew is underway with the bittering Hallertau hops….

Getting all that malty goodness into the Fermzilla for fermentation..

And finally, some neutral, high temp fermentation beast…. yeast to get the Marzen fermentation underway…

All in a day’s work! We look forward to October to taste these 2 brews. More information to come!

UB3 Bistro and Tap house on 8th August 2023

Off the beaten track, it was a unique experience heading to the Ubi industrial area where UB3 Bistro and Tap house is located.

A strong supporter of the local craft beer community and serving up 12 taps of locally produced beers to wash down exciting mix of Creole and Cajun dishes influenced with Asian heritage.

Return to the Temple Cellars on 11th July 2023

It has been a long time since we revisited an old friend of CBA. The good folk here were also previously running Freehouse at Boon Tat Street which was an institution pre-covid.

Temple Cellars at Robertson have made some renovations and expanded the tap list. As usual a comprehensive range of beer styles were available in bottles and cans and we had a chillax evening running through IPAs, hearty imperial stouts to just-so-complex Belgium Gueuzes..

Ollie Seltzers Tasting @ Ziggy Zaggy's 13th June

The most rocking bar in Kampong Bugis hosted our June meet-up with 18 taps of crafted beverages and American fusion makan. Taking on a slightly different spin this time, we had Sam from Ollie Seltzers on board to give us the low down on this sparkling refreshing drink with hints and tips for brewing the best seltzer at home!

Ziggy Zagg’s Towkay, whom many will know as the affable Ngak, gave interested members a tour of the operations, and especially boggled our 10pm beer and seltzers induced minds on how the taps are set up behind the wall….

And for good measure, proving that beer can raise the human mind to a higher state of consciousness and clarity, our new member David ( Who is an expert in Applied Statistics and Data Science) shared that we had gathered on a very important day as 13th June is globally known as “Statistics and Beer Day”.

Did you know that Beer had a significant contribution to the field of Statistics, particularly to the Student t-distribution? Here are the facts:

June 13th is the birthday of William Sealy Gosset, best known for developing the Student’s T-Distribution. This development came out of his work as head brewer of Guinness in the early 1900s. In order to improve the reliability of beer batches, he used small samples to do tests, but there were no small-sample statistics at the time. So he developed such small-sample statistics, including the Student’s T-Distribution, which describes the distances of a sample mean (small sample) and the population mean. For instance if you took 5 samples from 5 barrels and found that the alcohol content was on average lower than you expected, that could either mean that something had gone wrong with the brewing, or simply that any small sample will deviate from population due to randomness. The T-distribution allowed him to check. His work is now widely used across all sciences (e.g. the T-Test). The name “Student” distribution is often thought to have something to do with school students. Actually Student (always capitalised) is the pen-name that William Sealy Gosset published under, as Guinness forbade the publishing under real names, in order to avoid sharing trade secrets.

Lastly, a big thank you to Ngak for hosting and drinking with us. Here’s a toast to Ngak’s kid!
